Sydney Sweeney to Lead ‘Custom of the Country’ Film Adaptation
Sydney Sweeney, fresh off the success of The Housemaid, is set to star in a new film adaptation of Edith Wharton’s classic 1913 novel Custom of the Country. Sweeney will not only star in the film but also serve as a producer, with production set to begin soon under the direction of Josie Rourke, known for her work on Mary Queen of Scots.
Custom of the Country follows Undine Spragg, a young woman from the Midwest who aspires to climb the social ladder in early 20th-century New York. Sweeney will portray this ambitious character, who navigates the complexities of a rapidly changing society in her pursuit of wealth and status.
Behind the Scenes
The film, produced by StudioCanal and Rabbit’s Foot Films, will be directed by Josie Rourke from her own adaptation of Wharton’s novel. Casting director Nina Gold is currently assembling the ensemble cast, with principal photography expected to begin soon.
Alongside Sweeney, Charles Finch will produce through Rabbit’s Foot Films, while Alison Owen of Monumental Pictures joins as a producer. StudioCanal is financing the project and will handle the film’s theatrical release in international markets. The company’s Ron Halpern, Shana Eddy-Grouf, and Isobel Carter will oversee production for StudioCanal.
